Building the most energy efficient home
Our aim was to design and build the most energy efficient home we could on a 600m2 allotment with a north facing aspect in a warm temperate climate.
This home was to be a brick on slab construction with 2.7m ceilings and incorporating the following features - 4 bedrooms, a large family, meals and kitchen area, a lounge, a study and with a double garage.
A priority was to take full advantage of the warmth from north eastern winter sun on to the thermal mass of our large tiled slab region in the living area of the home, as well as protecting this same area from the heat of the summer sun.
With much help from our friends at Eco Lateral we came up with this floor plan which enabled us to achieve all of our requirements as well as an 8 star Energy Rating.
Since the opening of Geoff Gibson Homes' latest Display home “The Phoenix”, all visitors agree it has become the new flagship of our Gaia Range of Greensmart homes.
“The Phoenix” is the first 8 Star Energy Rated, Greensmart Accredited display home in Toowoomba as well as being one of the first 8 star Display homes outside a Capital City.
A lot of time has been spent on careful planning of how to incorporate the cutting edge design required to achieve such a high star rating with the quality and style that Geoff Gibson Homes clients have become accustom.
Much careful consideration was given to the passive solar design to help reduce the need to artificially cool and heat in summer and winter, whilst retaining a comfortable home. To enhance the passive solar design and to help achieve the 8 star energy rating, we have chosen a light coloured ColourBond roof, fascia and gutter and teamed them with a platinum brick from the Austral Metallix range, which offers a unique new contemporary look, but is still in the mid solar absorbance range.
Many of the rooms have been tiled allowing a greater area of the floor to be utilized in the thermal mass of the home. The good thermal mass, with additional insulation and the ability to close doors to zone areas off are most important factors in helping maintain the constant air temperature throughout the home.
The Phoenix ticks all the boxes, as well as offering modern family living from the spaciousness of the grand entry with 3 meter ceiling, to the full length corner picture window that allows the warmth of the winter sun and the beautiful landscaped gardens right into the family room. A clever use of louvers, shutters and fans ensured excellent cross flow ventilation to keep the summer heat at bay.
This home boasts a Euroka designed and crafted Essa Stone / two pack kitchen with a pantry to die for, all opening into a large naturally lit meals family area with 2.7m ceilings. The Phoenix caters for the whole family with its 4 generous bedrooms, ensuite, walk-in robe, walk-in linen cupboard and walk-in pantry, powder room, office and formal lounge/media room.
